A Week Full of Sustainability, Science, and Experiences

As part of the European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW), the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management at Tomas Bata University hosted a rich program full of activities connecting students, faculty, experts, and the wider public.

On Monday, September 22, a Mapathon took place, during which students mapped unknown locations for the organization Doctors Without Borders. Through this activity, they contributed to saving lives in areas where a high-quality map is often crucial.

Wednesday was literally packed with events. In the morning, the third annual TFA (Toughest Firefighter Alive) competition was held. This contest, often regarded as one of the most demanding firefighter challenges, tests participants’ physical fitness, endurance, speed, and mental resilience. Competitors had to complete a series of tasks simulating real firefighter interventions – such as running in full gear, dragging hoses, transporting a dummy, and climbing to heights.

Compared to previous years, this year’s competition included not only faculty students but also representatives from other secondary schools and universities, giving the event a broader scope and more exciting dynamics. A new feature was the participation of professionals from the Fire Rescue Service, who ensured a high level of the competition and served as inspiration for younger participants. The entire event was supported by the Zlín Region, TBU leadership, and our faculty, attracting a large audience of students and faculty members. The TFA competition thus became not only a sporting challenge but also an important opportunity for networking among current and future professionals in crisis management and civil protection.

In the afternoon, the traditional welcoming of first-year students took place, with more than 300 attendees. The program, prepared by senior students, was full of games and fun, which the newcomers greatly enjoyed.

Parallel to the sports and social program, the Social Entrepreneurship Conference was held, aimed at everyone interested in responsible business and cross-sector collaboration. Dean Prof. Ing. Zuzana Tučková, Ph.D., delivered a presentation on supporting social entrepreneurship at TBU and the university’s sustainable development strategy.

On Thursday, despite unfavorable weather, an unconventional form of teaching was successfully carried out – lessons in a tent. Students playfully tried out activities prepared by Dr. Kumpanová, gaining new experiences and a cheerful mood.

The week concluded on a grand note with the Night of Scientists, attended by over 1,100 people. Emergency services, secondary schools from Uherské Hradiště, volunteer firefighters, and enthusiasts from FLCM all contributed, creating a unique evening full of science, knowledge, and inspiration for all generations.

European Sustainable Development Week at FLCM confirmed that sustainability is a living topic here, connecting education, research, and social responsibility.
