Project starting date:     fixed date: 1 January 2024

Project duration:              84 months

Project objective:

AGROECOLOGY, the European partnership “Accelerating the Agricultural Systems Transition: agroecological living labs and research infrastructures” is an ambitious, large-scale European research and innovation effort between the EC and 26 Member States (MS), Associated Countries (AC) and third countries. AGROECOLOGY will support an agricultural sector that is fit to meet the objectives and challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, food security and sovereignty, the environment, while ensuring a profitable and attractive activity for farmers. Fundamental changes are needed to make agriculture more sustainable, resilient and responsive to societal and political demands. Agroecology builds on natural, biological interactions and uses state-of-the-art science, technology and innovation based on farmers’ knowledge. It is a promising approach with the potential to respond to the challenges facing the European agricultural sector and to meet its needs. Real-life testing and experimental environments, living labs are a suitable tool to accelerate the agroecological transition. Research infrastructures will also contribute to making scientific knowledge on agroecology available for this transition. Together, these tools will enable ambitious experiments at different scales, link science and practice, provide scientifically sound evidence on the effects of new approaches and accelerate the agroecological transition. AGROECOLOGY will pool EC and national resources to fund high-level research generating appropriate knowledge and technologies in line with the main themes described in the Strategic Research and Innovation Plan, while introducing a range of supporting activities to inform, consult, advise and engage different stakeholders in capacity building, awareness raising and management and exchange of the knowledge and data generated.
