Mapathon at FLCM: Helping the World from Uherské Hradiště

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management held its second Mapathon of the year, a volunteer mapping afternoon organized in cooperation with Doctors Without Borders.

The event was led by Jakub Trojan, MSc, PhD, and offered participants not only a meaningful activity, but also an opportunity to spend time in a fine group.

This time we focused together on the Bamyan region of Afghanistan, where Doctors Without Borders operates several medical facilities. However, they lacked accurate geodata to operate effectively – and that’s what we helped with. The challenge was to identify buildings and ruins on satellite imagery. In just two hours, more than 450 geo objects were mapped! This data will now be validated and will subsequently help in planning humanitarian interventions.

Although the turnout was intimate, the benefit was all the greater – and the participants certainly did not miss out. Faculty gifts and pizza awaited them as a small thank you for their time and commitment. The Mapathon reaffirmed that even a small team can accomplish great things. We’re already planning more events like this – keep an eye on our website and social media, and next time join us!
