Geographical aspects of citizen science

Geographical aspects of citizen science: mapping trends, scientific potential and societal impact in the Czech Republic

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports within the LT – INTEREXCELLENCE programme supported the project LTC18067, whose principal investigator was the Institute of Geonics of the CAS. For the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, the project was led by Doctor of Science Jakub Trojan, MSc MBA Ph.D. The project duration was 2018-2020.

Project objectives

The project was a continuation of the international cooperation within the OC COST: Geographical Aspects of Citizen Science project and focused on:

  1. Mapping the current environment and trends of citizen science in the Czech Republic.
  2. Strengthening the role of citizen science for civil society and finding optimal tools for the implementation of citizen science projects.
  3. developing tools for standardization and optimization of data in information and other systems.
  4. Evaluation of internal and external communication approaches for citizen science projects in research and education.
  5. Promotion and dissemination of project results, including publication of technical and popularization articles, website management and organization of creative meetings.

Project outputs

One of the key outcomes of the project was the maintenance and development of the www.citizenscience.cz domain, which has become a hub for collecting information on citizen science projects in the Czech Republic. This portal supports the sharing of scientific data and the connection between scientists and the public.

INTER-EXCELLENCE programme

This project was implemented within the framework of the INTER-EXCELLENCE programme, administered by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The programme is aimed at developing and strengthening the quality of Czech research and development through international cooperation. Its objectives include:

– Increasing the quality of research and integration of the Czech Republic into European and world scientific structures.

– Supporting the cooperation of Czech scientific institutions with international partners.

– Improving the involvement of the Czech scientific community in the European Research Area.

The LTC18067 project has contributed to a greater visibility of citizen science in the Czech Republic and helped to create tools for better connections between scientists and the public. The long-term benefit of the project is the promotion of participatory scientific research and greater involvement of citizens in scientific activities.
