Ecological glass matrix with effective antibacterial ions
The technical solution for water sanitation comes with an ecological glass matrix that is enriched with effective antibacterial ions. This innovative product is developed for use in continuous systems for effective water sanitization, using free or sintered particle technology that is placed in blocks. A significant benefit is the optimization of the composition of the glass matrix, which significantly improves antibacterial efficiency and allows for better flow of disinfected water in industrial applications.
History and development of the technology
The project, led by a team of experts from Tomas Bata University in Zlín and NEDFORM s.r.o., builds on previous research that focused on biologically active glass matrices for water sanitization. This development provides solutions for optimizing the glass matrix and increasing its antibacterial effectiveness. Previous technologies often encountered problems such as low mechanical properties and high pressure drop, which were unsuitable for practical applications in crisis situations.
Description of the technological solution
The new solution focuses on an eco-friendly glass matrix that is enriched with effective antibacterial ions. The matrix has a particle size between 1 and 10 mm and contains a specially balanced ratio of chemical components: sodium oxide (Na2O), lithium oxide (Li2O), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and boron oxide (B2O3). This unique chemical mix ensures an effective antibacterial effect thanks to the synergy of lithium ions, which increase the effectiveness of boron ions.
The result is a 200 times higher antibacterial efficacy of the eco-friendly glass matrix compared to previous systems. In addition, this improved matrix is significantly more resistant to self-aggregation (stickiness), which would otherwise reduce the effective surface area and efficiency of the system. The eco-friendly glass matrix is thus much more suitable for use in industrial filtration plants, where it allows efficient flow of disinfected water with less need for refilling the antibacterial column with new frit.
Benefits and applications
This technological advancement brings several key benefits, including:
– Higher antibacterial efficacy: thanks to the combination of lithium and boron ions, which provides a synergistic effect, significantly higher antibacterial efficacy is achieved than previous solutions.
– Durability and longevity.
– Higher water flow: the innovative composition of the matrix allows for a high flow rate of disinfected water, ideal for industrial and emergency applications.
This system is suitable for filtration equipment used to sanitize water in a variety of applications, including crisis water supply or water purification applications in high pollution risk areas.
Examples and performance testing
In practical tests, the eco-friendly glass matrix showed a significant improvement in antibacterial efficacy when applied to Escherichia coli CCM 4517. When tested for contact times of 5, 10 and 20 minutes, the matrix achieved excellent results, with efficacy documented as significantly strong compared to other commonly used materials.
Further tests, such as column flow tests, have shown that even at higher water flow rates the glass matrix maintains its high antibacterial effectiveness. This means that it is able to effectively sterilize water even when water is passed through the system at a rapid rate.
Conclusion
The eco-friendly glass matrix containing effective antibacterial ions represents a significant advance in water sanitisation. This product offers a solution for industrial filtration systems where high demands are placed on efficiency, long life and low energy consumption. Thanks to the synergy of lithium and boron ions, significantly higher antibacterial efficiency is achieved, making this solution the optimal choice for a wide range of water sanitation applications.
